Shoulder impingement often occurs as a result of repetitive overhead shoulder activity. Impingement occurs in sports, such as, swimming, cricket, baseball, or tennis, but can also occur in workers such as painters. Another common occurrence that has occurred in my patients is simply people hitting their shoulder, or sleeping directly on it that has resulted in an impingement. Furthermore, shoulder impingement is often related to poor posture, lack or proper shoulder flexibility, poor stability, and strength. If you have an ache in your shoulder or feel a catching on reaching or overhead activity you may have a shoulder impingement. Proper diagnosis is key to a successful recovery.
